Common Computer Terms Explained

CPU-Central Processing Unit- this is the computer's brain. All of the computer's tasks are calculated and performed using the CPU

Memory(aka RAM)- Temporary storage space for your computer to use while running programs. RAM stands for Random Access Memory.

Hard Drive- A stack of cylinders that use magnetism to store all of the files on your computer (never put magnets in or around your computer!)

AGP- Accelerated Graphics Port- the type of motherboard connection used solely for video cards.

Motherboard- this is the heart of the computer. It takes information from input devices and the hard drive, runs it through the processor, and sends information back to the user

Ethernet Card- A peripheral card that is plugged into the motherboard and allows you to connect to a LAN (local area network) or directly with another computer.
